Pick your Geographic Area of Interest

The Economic Impact Calculator and the Social Return on Investment Calculator will ask you for your ‘Geographic Area of Interest’ – the geographical area you are interested in measuring the impact of your project on.

So for example, if your project was all about delivering activities to residents of the West Midlands (including Birmingham; The Black Country; Coventry, Warwickshire & Solihull; Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire; Herefordshire & Worcestershire; Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin), it is likely that you will want to look at economic impact on the West Midlands, so you should pick the West Midlands as your Geographic Area of Interest.

Your Geographic Area of Interest can be as small or large as you want it to be.

It could also be a combination of areas, not just one; for example, you could select the West Midlands + East Midlands + South West.

To help pick your Geographic Area of Interest, we have listed some standard adminstrative areas < click to download. You may want to consider picking one of these as your Geographic Area of Interest.

Tip: In order to get the best out of the Economic Impact Calculator, you will need to know certain facts about your project and its relationship to your chosen Geographic Area of Interest. Specifically, you should have an idea of a) the amount of income for the project that came from funders based outside your Geographic Area of Interest (as well as the overall total income for your project), and b) the number of participants that took part in your project that live outside your Geographic Area of Interest (as well as the total number of participants for your project). For advice on how to collect this information, see the Templates for Project Managers and Data Analysis Guide.

Tip: Similarly, in order to get the best out of the Social Return on Investment (SROI) Calculator, you will need to know certain facts about your project and its relationship to your chosen Area of Interest. Specifically, the Calculator will ask you for the number of participants that took part in your project that live inside your Geographic Area of Interest (as well as the total number of participants for your project). For advice on how to collect this information, see the Data Analysis Guide.
